A helicopter crash outside Kiev, Ukraine, killed Interior Minister Denis Monastirsky and 16 others, including four children, on Wednesday.

Until the last update of this news, the cause of the plane crash was still unknown, but the Ukrainian government confirmed the death of the interior minister in the crash. This position is one of the most important in the country – the head of the portfolio, the head of the army and one of the protagonists of the war in Ukraine.

How did the helicopter crash?

The Ukrainian intelligence agency said it had opened an investigation to determine the causes of the helicopter crash and indicated it was currently studying the following hypotheses:

  • Violation of aviation rules
  • Maleficent technical functioning of the helicopter;
  • An intentional act to dismantle a vehicle.

According to local residents, the helicopter crashed into part of the nursery and into a wall. The fall caused a huge explosion.

“We kept the children away from the kindergarten through the fence, mainly because there was a fire on the second floor,” he said.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke about the crash of the plane which he said "shows the price that Ukraine is paying".

"Our thoughts on this sad day are with the families of the victims and the injured and with President Zelensky, who has lost his interior minister."
